Balancing Safety, Conservation and Biodiversity
At Holmes Tree Services, some of the most rewarding projects are those where tree preservation and public safety must be carefully balanced. Recently, our team completed a programme of specialist works on a mature Oak tree protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), ensuring its continued retention while addressing identified structural concerns.
Protected trees play a vital role within our landscapes. Beyond their visual impact, mature Oaks provide invaluable habitat for wildlife, contribute to local biodiversity, store carbon, and often form an important part of a community's natural heritage. When issues arise, removal should always be considered a last resort.
Assessing the Tree's Condition
Prior to any works taking place, the Oak underwent a detailed inspection to assess its structural integrity and identify potential risks.
Several historic Ganoderma brackets were evident around the base of the tree, indicating the presence of decay within the root and buttress region. Further investigation revealed an old occluding wound on the main stem, with a cavity opening present at the upper extent of the wound.
These defects were affecting the attachment points of two significant scaffold limbs extending towards the south-west and north-west sections of the crown. In addition, a large extended lateral limb projecting over neighbouring gardens and boundary fencing contained substantial deadwood, while further significant deadwood was distributed throughout the canopy.
While these defects warranted intervention, the tree continued to provide considerable landscape, ecological and amenity value. The objective was therefore to retain the tree wherever possible through appropriate risk management measures.
A Retention-Focused Approach
Modern arboriculture increasingly focuses on retaining valuable mature trees through careful management rather than unnecessary removal.
Following assessment, a programme of selective remedial works was designed to reduce risk while preserving the tree's overall form, health and ecological function.
By selectively removing hazardous deadwood and reducing loading on compromised sections of the canopy, the tree's risk profile could be significantly improved without compromising its contribution to the surrounding environment.
Specialist Access and Safe Working Practices
Due to the scale of the tree and the complexity of the works required, the project utilised both a climbing arborist and a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP).
Working simultaneously within different areas of the canopy allowed the team to safely and efficiently access difficult sections of the tree while maintaining precise control over the removal of larger deadwood and defective material.
This coordinated approach ensured the highest standards of safety for both the workforce and the surrounding area while minimising disturbance to the tree itself.
Protecting Wildlife and Enhancing Biodiversity
As with all tree works undertaken by Holmes Tree Services, a thorough wildlife inspection was completed before work commenced.
Mature Oak trees are among the most important ecological assets within the British landscape, supporting hundreds of species throughout their lifespan. Retaining and enhancing habitat value is therefore a key consideration whenever management works are carried out.
To maximise environmental benefits, all woodchip generated during the operation was retained on site. This material will gradually break down, enriching the soil, improving moisture retention and supporting a diverse range of fungi, microorganisms and invertebrates.
Timber arising from the works was also retained and carefully stacked to create habitat piles. These features provide valuable shelter, nesting opportunities and foraging resources for insects, small mammals, amphibians and other wildlife.
The Importance of Managing Mature Oaks
Veteran and mature Oak trees are irreplaceable assets. While younger trees can be planted, the ecological value developed over decades or even centuries cannot simply be recreated.
Sensitive management allows these trees to continue providing environmental, historical and community benefits while reducing the risks associated with structural defects, decay and deadwood accumulation.
