Large-Scale Roadside Arboricultural Operations

Recently, our team worked alongside Glendale, GLM and Ringway to complete a two-day programme of highway tree works requiring road closures and specialist equipment to safely manage roadside trees along the local highway network.

Why Highway Tree Management Matters

Scope of the Works
The project involved the removal of dead and diseased Oak, Ash and Elm trees that had deteriorated to a point where retention was no longer considered appropriate.
In addition, crown lifting operations were undertaken throughout the work area to provide a minimum clearance height of six metres above the carriageway.
Maintaining adequate clearance above roads is essential to accommodate larger vehicles, improve visibility and prevent contact between vehicles and low-hanging branches.
The works were carefully planned to ensure that all operations could be completed safely while minimising disruption to the travelling public.
Specialist Equipment for Large-Scale Operations
Given the scale of the project and the location of the trees, a range of specialist machinery was utilised throughout the operation.
Equipment deployed included:
A 21-metre Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) for safe access to the canopy.
A digger to assist with handling and site operations.
A whole tree chipper to efficiently process arisings.
A timber trailer for the safe transportation of larger timber sections.
The use of appropriate machinery allowed the works to be completed efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of safety and productivity.

Road and footpath closures are often one of the most visible aspects of highway tree works, and understandably can sometimes cause short-term inconvenience.
However, these closures are essential when undertaking high-risk arboricultural operations.
